March is Autoimmune Awareness Month! An autoimmune disease is a condition in which a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks and damages healthy body tissue and cells, rather than protecting it from viruses, bacteria, toxins, and other harmful invaders as it was designed to do.
Raising awareness is critical to advancing research and improving care for people affected by autoimmune conditions. Autoimmune diseases affect approximately 10% of the global population…some you may have heard of, like multiple sclerosis (MS), Type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Others are rare such as scleroderma, myasthenia gravis and thyroid eye disease (TED). Chances are you know someone who is living with at least one autoimmune condition, not to mention those who are still searching for a diagnosis. And, unfortunately, autoimmune disease is on the rise.
During Autoimmune Awareness Month, please join us in learning more about autoimmune disease and sharing information. By raising awareness, we can make a difference!
